A brief history of the Neptune Soccer Classic

Now in our twelfth year of all-volunteer operations, the Neptune Soccer Classic (NSC) is committed to supporting competitive and recreational adult soccer by providing a top quality tournament. Our vision is to deliver premier customer service while promoting teamwork, fun, a positive attitude, and love for the game.

Steady Growth. The NSC is a not-for-profit, all volunteer tournament that is the first adult tournament to be formally sanctioned by Virginia’s state adult soccer governing body, Metropolitan DC-Virginia Soccer Association. The 2008 Neptune Soccer Classic competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 9th and 10th. The Neptune Soccer Classic has grown from 36 teams during our inaugural tournament in 1997 to an average of 77 men’s, women’s, and co-ed teams from 2002 to 2007. Player ages range from 18 to over 60. Though adult soccer continues to grow in the Hampton Roads community, we are pleased that approximately 60% of the 1500 men and women who play in the NSC come from within Virginia-DC but outside the local area and 20% come from out of state. To keep the tournament both fun and high quality, we intend to maintain a manageable tournament size of roughly 80 teams, which allows us to maximize use of the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex while keeping all matches at the same venue.

Tournament Goals. Our goals are to consistently provide a top-quality tournament that presents Hampton Roads and Virginia/DC soccer in a positive light and to support development of competitive and recreational adult soccer by providing a safe, fun, and positive playing environment - through support for player and referee development, facilities improvement, and community outreach. To meet our mission of continual improvement, we need to be responsive to player feedback. Post-tournament comments, though consistently positive, have called on us to improve in a number of areas, including increased referee certification level, more consistent placement of teams in appropriate competitive categories, provision of top-quality trainers, etc. In addition, because of the resort atmosphere of Virginia Beach in late Summer, many teams visiting from outside the local area are interested in a more “festival” type environment. These initiatives will keep us on a course of continuous improvement and to sustain NSC as a truly premier adult tournament for all levels of competition.

We are grateful to our Title, Field, and other Sponsors.Planning and coordinating the NSC is a year-round endeavor for our volunteers. Title sponsorship and sanctioning from MDCVSA and the Southeast Virginia Women’s Soccer Association provide a solid base of support for the tournament, and sponsorship from and several local businesses and other friends of soccer have allowed us to provide a safe and fun competitive tournament at a reasonable price per team.
